Colombos FC

Are You Sitting Comfortably...

This is the on-line home of Colombos FC, a now sadly-defunct football team, which once played (?) in the lower reaches of the Portsmouth Sunday League.

Colombos was much less than just a football team – it was a group of mates who liked a drink and who refused to subscribe to the generally accepted theory that they were rubbish at football.

It was also much less than its constituent parts, as in truth, one or two of the guys could actually play a bit. Happily for the remainder they were easily dragged down to our level and remained there throughout.

Within these pages you will find biographies of the many people who passed through the ranks of Colombos FC - let's not call them players -the odd picture, many an anecdote (playing for Colombos was nothing if not memorable... and it wasn't memorable) and the latest news on social gatherings.

We also intend this site to be used as a sort of Colombos Reunited. We hope that through our endeavours all ex-players will be able to remain in touch, perpetuating the friendship and incredible bond that has outlasted the demise of the club.

The first few pages of this website deal primarily with Colombos FC, the football club that brought this clumsy, unskilled, drunken and yet inseparable group of people together. The final few pages deal with the social meetings that keep this club alive, namely:

CRABS - Colombos Rambling And Beer Society. With its own flag! A society that brings old mates together for a beer and sometimes a walk.

Colombos Golf Society. Yet to be teed off, it is hoped this will see some of the old crowd meet up for sporting activity.

CRAPPY - Colombos Regular Annual Planned P***-up at Yuletide. A treasure hunt-cum-pub crawl that has taken place nearly every year since the club's inception.

If you are a former member of Colombos FC and would like to contribute with anecdotes (or a biog if we have forgotten you) please email either bunky@colombos.co.uk or monster@colombos.co.uk and we will ensure that you are overlooked completely.

We need to pass on some very sad news.

Whilst trying to make contact with a few players, we have been advised that our good friend, Kev Nicholson, died at work, after suffering a heart attack in November 2007, he was only 40 years of age. I'm sure we all remember Kev's commitment and determination around the  pitch and our thoughts go out to his mother Marlies.

Kev was cremated on November 29, 2007, wearing the colours of Borussia Monchengladbach and Southampton - his two favourite football teams.

We also have to report the death of Gary Spencer in May 2009, who sadly passed away after contracting meningitis. He was a good mate and solid central defender. Our best wishes go out to Dawn, Holly and Elliott.

Gary was buried on June 10, 2009 at the South Downs Natural Burial Site, a beautiful location, and many of his old Colombos FC team-mates were in attendance.

Both Kev and Gary will be remembered very fondly.
